Helping Those Who Struggle, Letting Go of Those Who Don’t Want To

In every group or team, you’ll meet people who have different attitudes toward work and progress. Some are motivated but struggle with challenges, while others just don’t seem to care. As a young leader or someone stepping into management, it’s important to know how to handle both situations.

When someone is genuinely trying but finding it difficult, they need support. These people may need extra guidance, some training, or maybe just someone to believe in them. By offering help to those who are willing to improve, you show that your team is a place where effort is valued. It’s not just about being perfect right away, but about showing the drive to get better. As a leader, helping others succeed strengthens not only them but also the team’s bond and overall performance. This is how you build trust and loyalty, by showing that you care about individual growth.

On the other hand, there are always people who have the ability but simply don’t want to put in the effort. No amount of support will make a difference if someone is unwilling to try. Keeping them around often affects the rest of the group in a negative way. It can lower morale, create frustration, and slow down progress for everyone else. As tough as it may be, it’s better to let these people go. This doesn’t mean you’re being harsh, it’s about protecting the overall energy and culture of your team.

In your early years of leading, it might be tempting to try and save everyone, but the truth is, not everyone wants to be saved. Helping those who are struggling but trying will always be worth it. But for those who just don’t want to contribute, it’s best to part ways sooner rather than later. When you do this, you’ll create an environment where people who are passionate about growth can thrive, and those who aren’t will find their own path elsewhere.

Ultimately, the balance is simple: support those who are trying, even if they’re struggling, and make room for those who actually want to grow with the team. This is how you create a positive, focused group where effort is appreciated, and the future is built by those who are committed.
